What Is Sea Freight Transport?
Sea transport is the term used to describe how large amounts of cargo are transported by cargo ships. Since the 1960s, containers have been primarily used for maritime transport.
Containerization facilitated the transport of large loads, reduced the costs of storing goods and fuel consumption, reduced uncertainty by the possibility of tracking the crate and removing the need for reloading, and also shortened the time lost by vessels in the port (previously ships spent up to 2/3 of their lives in ports).
Sea Freight transport is the most popular method of cargo transport among people and companies involved in international trade. It is the cheapest and most environmentally friendly method, but also the most time-consuming.
What Is The Shipping Process Like?
At first glance, the process of shipping goods by sea may seem a bit complicated, but after reading it closer, you will notice that it is organized and structured.
Step 1: Receipt of goods from the manufacturer.
Step 2: Transport the goods to the warehouse. The products are then tested and packaged before being put into a container.
Step 3: Customs clearance at the port of origin.
Step 4: Shipment of goods on board the ship.
Step 5: Customs clearance at the destination port. The goods may be confiscated by customs due to a lack of sufficient paperwork, as in the case of the port of origin.
Step 6: Transporting the cargo to the warehouse and unloading.
Step 7: Carriage of goods to their destination.
As you can see, this isn’t a particularly difficult procedure. However, it requires prior preparations and arrangements, such as the choice of container or rules on which our transport will be based.
Types Of Sea Freight Transport
FCL ( Full Container Load ) – container freight. The load must not exceed the maximum authorized weight. FCL is ideal for transporting large loads.
LCL ( Less than Container Load ) – groupage freight. It consists in sharing the space of one container between several importers. Perfect for transporting loads that do not fill the entire container. The downside of this solution are frequent stops and opening the container to add goods to other consignors.
Bulk cargo – transportation of coal, grain, wood and other raw materials in large quantities. They are carried by a special type of ship, called a bulk carrier.
Oversized cargo – transportation of machines and other structures that cannot be disassembled into smaller parts.
Ro-ro ( Roll on / Roll off ) – the goods are brought in and out of the ship directly in the vehicle.
Dangerous goods – incl. chemicals, flammable, toxic or radioactive substances, the transport of which requires special permits and precautions. This category also includes items that contain batteries, such as laptops or telephones, as well as perfumes and aerosols.

In order for our goods to reach their destination safely, they must be properly packed. The most convenient solution is to pack the products in cardboard boxes and place them on pallets, which are then loaded into containers.
Based on the dimensions of the boxes and pallets, you can calculate which container will be the most profitable for us. The goods are usually loaded on pallets at the production site or at the port warehouses.
